Brief: Create a concept for SOS Barnbyar that applies to the vision of the future of fundraising. Presentation of ideas are to be put on Vimeo and the most popular video submitted within the 48 hours from start to finish, will win the competition Thoughts: So this were my very first project at Hyper Island and as excited and eager as i always am to start a new project and get to know new people, nothing so far could match the energy i had for this specific project. All of us were new at the school and i for one was willing to give 200% to prove what i was capable of, don’t want to give a bad first impression right?
Team building: We started out by getting to know every team-members desire of learnings, work ethics, likes and dislikes while working with in groups and skills to match what areas we should be “head of” during the project. I have my presentation skills in my backpack since i went to Procivitas and established my own company and since i wanted to do extra good during this brief, i was picked as the head of the pitch and presentation we were going to run through at the deadine with the clients.
Research: So before we wanted to jump into building concepts and discussing ideas, we did research about the target groups of our clients so it’s easier to understand what way will be the most effective to communicate with our potential users. Researching behavior in social media, demographic area, different ethnicities, sex and age, was enough for this project since our total time of work is 48 hours, so trial and error we found most pleasing than having to much data with no thoughts behind it.
Ideation: Later on we went into the ideation phase and started to bombard each other with ideas of concepts we could work with. Hundreds of different ideas went up against the wall on colorful post-it notes, now the next challenge would be to narrow it down into one strong idea that we all more or less want to work with.
Feedback: While picking out the “best” idea, i knew that i had to be able to step out of the comfort zone to be able to give 100% honest and constructive criticism. So we ran through countless of feedback rounds and as we progressed, feeling safe enough to be able to speak my opinion was no issue at all.
Concept/Production: The idea was picked. We were going to make an animation for a concept we called “The Life Switch” – It’s a concept were the user while doing his/hers daily routine whilst being in the city will be able to by two simple steps send money to a desired area in which SOS-Barnbyar is helping out by just interacting with a pad that’s stationed in different popular areas in cities. The user will then be able to track where the money goes and what change the user is helping out with. We believed that transparency towards the users were one of the key elements to attract the new generation towards charity since we found out that our target group is not 100 %comfortable with charities because of the fact that they never see change, development or what happens with the money they give.
Wrap-up: So as we were close to finishing the concept, the only thing left to do was to finish the animation which our illustrators were working on, we started to relax and a little bit sloppy. Since we agreed on that the illustrators did not have to attend the presentation the following morning because of the fact that they had to sit up the whole night to finish the animation, we lost some desired communication between the different parts in the team. We did not plan for the day ahead and we all expected different areas of responsibility which in the end resulted that we couldn’t present our concept since there was so video up on Vimeo.
Learnings: The first project ever at Hyper Island was a blast. I had a lot of fun and learned tons of stuff but the most important ones was…
A. Communication is key – It’s important for the teams structure so that every team member is on the same track and knows what everyone is working on.
B. Spend time with team members part from work – Spending time with team members and seeing them as friends not as co-workers i find essential for the creativity to enhance and flow in the process. Being able to feel comfortable enough to share crazy ideas and laugh at each others mistakes i find important.
C. The show must go on – I was ready to pitch the concept and adrenalin was flowing through my body so when i heard that we didn’t have the material we needed i felt like it was such a buzzkill that i shut down and made a decision with the other team members that we should skip the presentation. Later on i thought to myself, why the f-ck did i skip the pitch. I’ve been taught that if everything fails when pitching, i’m supposed to go on, give it my best shot, ignore failures and proceed with the presentation. I will never again miss an opportunity like that because of tech problems or material missing etc. When it comes down to it, all you need to pitch a concept, is a presenter that is willing to put his heart out for the idea.
